  • Use of seat belts
    • Compulsory for front- and rear-seat passengers.
  • Driving with headlights
    • All year long, inside and outside the cities.
  • Mountain areas
    • Vehicles going up the hill must reverse into a passing bay if there’s not enough room for two vehicles to pass.
  • Off-road
    • It is illegal to drive off-road.
  • Speed limits
    • Residential areas: usually 30 km/h
      Build-up areas/cities: 50 km/h
      Outside build-up areas/city limits: 80 km/h
      Expressways: usually 90 km/h,
      w/ trailer w/ brakes 80 km/h – motor cycle: 60 km/h
  • Limit of alcohol
    • 0,2 per mille
  • Parking
    • Parking on main roads or on bends is not allowed. A sign that reads "All stans forbudt" means No stopping allowed. Parking metres are differentiated as follows: Yellow = one-hour, Gray = two-hour, Brown = three-hour.Parking regulations are strictly enforced.
  • Licences
  • Fuel
    • It's illegal to use diesel fuel from the red pump. This fuel is subsidised for farmers. Ink in it stains the tank. If you're found to have such a stained tank, the fine is about $600. Fuel stations are usually closed from 7am to 10pm on weekdays, though these times vary greatly; some stay open 24 hours. During weekends stations are open only in highly populated areas. Major credit cards are not always accepted. Leaded super petrol has an octane rating of 98. Unleaded petrol is called blyfritt kraftstoff or blyfri and has an octane rating of 95.
  • Fines, without accident or dangerous behaviour
    • Alcohol: Starting with approx. 615 Euro
    • Speeding (20 km/h too fast): Starting with approx. 390 Euro July 2006: Allowed 60 km/h, registered 77 km/h, fine: 4200 NOK plus two punches (3 years validity / 8 punches = loss of driving licence) Parking: Approx. 90
    • Euro Red traffic light: Approx. 640 Euro Mobile phone: Approx. 120 Euro
    • Overtaking: Approx. 640 Euro
    • Police is empowered to collect fines on the spot.
